They are a different species, but they are very close to humans.
And they live among humans. [ they aren't things, and where else could they live? It's true that it was all very scary for Kaneki but ghouls don't have any other choice, either ]

You're going to have to try harder than that.

Just because you're something different doesn't give others the right to fear you. Not unless you want them to. If that's the case, then you live your own consequences.

So you either keep what you are a secret to everyone you meet, and be afraid of prosecution yourself until you eventually slip up.
Or.
You learn how to accept what you are, and make sure everyone else knows you either mean them no harm, or that you won't show mercy to those who aim to take your life out of irrational fear for their own.
Whining about wanting to be normal is, at this point, tired. Useless.
And I'm sure about this because I've been living like it for over a decade.
