Hi, guys.

[The man on the other end of the network smiles awkwardly. He's gearing up for a conversation, but drawing attention to himself is a new experience. The way he draws a breath and fidgets makes it obvious that he's still feeling out the network.]

So, this is definitely on the list of moments that make you think you might be dreaming. It sounds like we have people from just about everywhere here. Someone tell me this isn't the weirdest thing you've ever had happen to you. It'll make me feel better.

Before you got here, did any of you have strange things happen? You know, things out of fantasy movies or fever dreams for everyone else? What's the weirdest thing that you've ever seen?

[He laughs, mixing an exhale into it as he ducks his head.]

Sorry, I'm trying out the whole coaching thing. My name's Christian. Apparently I'm working with the Gramarye Magic Research people as a life coach, so if anyone wants to get a drink sometime and discuss tragic life choices, I have a really open schedule. I'd say we can do lunch too, but is that weird? I don't want to be weird.

[Fatima's life dictates that she has to carefully manage and regulate her appearance. It's a bit of a neurosis, really. She's had to dedicate much of the last few years to proving that she's every bit as capable and mature as a bunch of vampires who have seen more than a few centuries. The mortal girl is not going to sit at the kiddie table, thank you very much. Which means not looking like a kiddie.

She wears a lot of make up. Like, a lot. It's well done and attractive, certainly. But noticeably an inch thick. Her hair is pulled back in a braid today, draping over her left shoulder. But what really completes the "I'm not a child" look is the attitude. It's her carefully schooled expression, just the right amount of jaded blase, as if to say "I've seen too much to ever be wide-eyed again."

It's her first network post. She figures first impressions matter. Although this is not how she imagined greeting the network.]

Hey, Fatima Merali here.

[She's got a thick, West Coast accent. She even says her name in a disgustingly Americanized way.]

Los Angeles, 2009, for any of you keeping track of that kind of thing.

Listen. Has anyone seen or heard from Ray Palmer lately? It's like he just vanished.

[Ivar's improving on using the video function. This time, he gets it on the first try. His voice is just a little above a whisper and he's looking off to the side at something just beyond the camera. The background shows he's in the forest beyond the city.]

Does anyone know where I can find a fire-proof bridle?

[The question seems a bit of a non-sequitur until he turns the camera to the side. There's a Ponyta standing not too far off. Ivar's been trying to get it closer all afternoon. It's taken a lot of patience, but now it's only about ten feet away. Its diamond-shaped eyes narrow as it watches the Viking and the Pokemon tosses its head, too suspicious to come any closer.]

Come on. I won't hurt you. Just a little further. Come on.

[For someone who usually keeps everyone at arm's length with a combination of sarcasm and toughness, he sounds far more gentle than usual. It seems to be working, as the Ponyta takes a hesitant step forward, ears pricked forward in anticipation. Ivar's face is a combination of wonder and awe. He's about ten seconds away from completely freaking out. This creature looks like something from an old legend, a horse with a mane and tail of fire. This qualifies as the coolest thing he's seen since he came to the city.]

[ If the state of the office is any indication of the state of the department, the city is in trouble.

The room is papered from floor to ceiling in layers of maps, diagrams, post-its and technical drawings. What table surface isn’t covered in coffee cups, take-out boxes and junk food wrappers is home to more of the same, held down at the corners by pieces of half-finished robotics projects repurposed into paperweights. Three different colours of marker express problems, ideas, arguments, formulas, jokes and doodles over every inch of the large windows looking out over the city.

It’s been a long forty-eight hours, and the three men standing in front of the camera are in only slightly better shape than the workplace disaster zone around them. A giant topographical city map covers the wall behind their backs, dotted with push pins and bits of string radiating out from the centre.

Off camera, a voice many will recognize as Clark Kent, reporter for the Riverview News and volunteer camera-man: 3, 2, 1, and rolling.

Left; Michael sits on the edge of a desk. Seemingly in his element in the midst of chaos. Focused. He pins the camera with his eyes before speaking. ]

This is Michael Scofield, Structural Integrity Project Lead of the Wall Research and Development Department.

[ Center; Tony blinks, pulling his gaze up from the paper he was scribbling on (honestly, paper) to pay some attention. He’s not in great condition, with electrified hair and dark circles under his bright eyes, but manages a tight smile.]

Uh, Tony Stark. Um, I do what he said, except different because I deal with weapons and defense and-- Whatever, I work with these two in order to keep this place as safe as possible from the shit that is out there. [ A gesture behind him, to the map on the wall.]

Well, mostly out there. Because thanks to this shit that--

THAT-- [ Right; Ray seems to realize instantly how loud that just was, laughs, and then tones his volume down a little. ] --Michael will tell you all about, in a second. [ There’s one clear meaning to the quick and slightly confused look he’s giving Tony: I thought we talked about this?!? ]

Right. [ Can you hear him rolling his eyes, Ray? Can you? Because he is, even as he steps back with a huff. ]

But hi! I’m Ray! Tony and I are both Perimeter Defense Engineers and Coordinators — haha, that’s kinda funny, it’s like we can coordinate each other or something — anyways! [ Back on topic. Anyone who’s able to see them right now can probably tell … Ray’s overcaffeinated. ] We’re here to ask for all of your help.

[ Michael stands up, pushing both Tony and Ray off to one side, and out of the way of the city map. He’ll be illustrating the key points of the following report with a laser pointer. ]

Two days ago a breach in the wall exterior was discovered. One thing people should know about the wall is that it’s not a solid mass. Within the wall is a network of maintenance tunnels for internal repair and reinforcement, many dating back to the wall’s inception. With the latest defense improvements, as well as the addition of the outer fence, most of the tunnels were sealed, but a few were left intact for research and development purposes.

I’m sure you’ve noticed the recent power outages. Riverview’s utilities are largely automated, self-sustaining, and renewably resourced, with the majority of treatment, processing and distribution occurring beneath the city.

We don’t know the exact timeline, or scenario, but we can hypothesize that in the past six months to a year, a local predator got inside one of tunnels, and through it was able to find access to the city’s underground infrastructure. There, it bred. Both Tony and Ray performed fly-throughs, and estimate the number of offspring somewhere in the range of five-hundred to a thousand.

It’s impossible to tell how much damage has been done without clearing the area. A failure to act may result in a loss of power and vital resources to Riverview. That’s where you come in. We’ve tried several methods of mass extermination, but with the risk of contaminating the city’s water supply, our options are limited. Our best bet is to gather a force large enough to do a full-scale manual extermination.

We’ve brought our findings to the Riverview council and they’ve granted us as many of the Perimeter Guard as they can spare, and clearance to seek assistance from the general public to fill in the gaps. We’ll need people who can exterminate, people who can perform urgent repairs, and people skilled in first-aid.

I’ll be performing structural integrity tests as the extermination progresses to ensure the safety of the operation. Please keep explosions and seismic damages to a minimum. You can volunteer here, or at your local Perimeter guard.

[ Michael steps back, giving Tony and Ray the floor again. ]

I will be looking for people to help make repairs in critical areas, trying to keep the power grid operational and the attacks minimal. I need people who are good with electrical engineering, work quickly, and can handle themselves in a fight if need be.

[ There is a pause before: ] Steve, I’ll message you about some things later.

[ Then Tony ducks out of the camera’s view, possibly for a shower, possibly for more coffee. He doesn’t return. ]

[ Ray waves to Tony as he leaves, like that’s normal, even if Tony can’t see him doing it. But then he focuses on the camera again. ]

I’m looking for chemists, city planners, maybe some … runners? [ Lightbulb moment. Really. It’s the best idea he’s had all day. ] Yeah, runners.

I’m so close to finding a formula that can put the monsters to sleep, instead of the rest of us. [ aka Ray is stuck and he refuses to admit it. ] And they’re in an enclosed space! We have to be able to use that and build some kind of delivery mechanism. Just- you know- without … knocking out all of our friends who are fighting the monsters ... instead of the monsters themselves. Anyways. Let’s do a team up!

[ Michael can't help but smile at Ray. Now that everything is more or less said and done, he almost looks as tired as he feels. Still, he keeps his head up and eyes focused. ] This is our city now. Let’s do our best to keep it safe.

What Michael said. And uh, just remember. When fighting monsters, safety is number one!

[ The 'Underground' Mission will be available as a prompt in the next TDM! Anyone and everyone is welcome to take part, make up their own related missions, etc. This plot was a collaborative effort between the players and the mods, thanks guys! ]

Consider this a little public service announcement, and my good deed for the day.

[At first it’s just Stephen Strange, looking even more like a magic hobo than he usually does, before he moves the feed to focus on a mini-fridge sitting in the corner of the communal kitchens and wouldn’t be anything to comment on if not for the heavy chains wrapped around it keeping the door shut, or the padlock that really looked like overkill.]

If you see this fridge here, missing its padlock or even worse open and I’m not already there dealing with it? I recommend either finding me, or a flamethrower immediately.

[The mini-fridge, which had been sitting quietly until this point started to shake, the sound of something inside smacking against the door making the chains around it rattle. Stephen came into view just long enough to smack the top of the fridge with the handle of a broom which seemed to startle whatever was inside into silence again.]

It should be in the floor 5 kitchen so if it’s not, even if it’s still locked, you’re going to want to come get me and I’ll deal with it.

And if you value your continued good health don’t eat anything that comes out of this thing.

[The camera is pretty evenly focused. The man sitting on the screen is less so - even behind his glasses it's obvious that, while he's looking at the tablet, he's not really looking at it. In fact, it's almost as if he accidentally pressed 'video' and meant instead to go for 'audio' - which is a likely scenario, honestly.

Matt will learn what to press and when over time.
]

I think I've got my floor mapped out, and a little bit of the surrounding area. I'm not really sure if the 'welcome to Riverview' video shows the layout of the place. A lot of you are probably a lot more familiar with things than I am already.

[A pause as he smiles, ducking his head to laugh and shrug. He doesn't really realize that everyone can see that.]

I don't mind exploring but I'd hate to get lost a few days out of the gate. If anyone's free to show me around, it would be appreciated. I'm a quick learner once I get a feel for things. I promise I'm very independent.

[ The look on Tony's face as the feed clicks on is clearly unamused. Possibly even Unamused, capital and all. Why is he so irritated you might ask? Well, don't you worry about that, he is bound to let you know. As soon as he finishes sipping on his coffee in a more than obnoxious way. If you look close enough, and know Tony, you will be able to see a darkness beneath his eyes, the kind that comes with too much coffee and too many ideas and not enough hours in the day, so clearly he has to sacrifice some of the night for the Greater Good or some shit.

Whatever. That is why there is coffee.

Once the coffee has been consumed, Tony gets up from where he is sitting, and it becomes very obvious that he is in the kitchen on the floor, a kitchen you have all seen thanks to a Viking, but there is no sign of him now. However, there are signs of someone making a rather large breakfast here (if only you could smell it, seriously, Tony would kill to eat some of it okay) and not sharing.

This? This is why Tony is unamused.]

Really, you come in here, use the space and leave the dishes, while also not sharing?

[ Steve is gonna be annoyed. Not that he isn't usually in that state. The images shifts as Tony puts the phone down, and there is the sound of more coffee making its way into his cup while you get a lovely view of the ceiling. Look, no scorch marks. Yet.]

That's just rude, even for gods of chaos and mischief. And here I was going to make you a fancy partial AI for your phone. Ha.

[ Look, he doesn't know if it was Loki, but he assumes it is. Because if it was Steve or Bucky they would have shared, and he is pretty sure that Stephen only eats things that are still moving, and Billy-- well maybe him too. But for now, his ire is on Loki.]

Also, working on some ideas for the defence perimeter, some new weapons and targeting systems, if there is anyone that has any ideas, let me know. I mean, I've probably already thought of it, but still might be nice to bounce ideas around.

Hello everyone. My name is Clark. I'll try and keep this brief.

Firstly, I've drawn up a blank list and placed one on the bulletin board on each housing floor. If those with medical expertise feel comfortable, they can put their name, residence here, and — if they have one — specialisation, in case of an emergency. We have several residents who aren't from the same point in time, so if you'd like to volunteer to update someone's medical knowledge, please mark your name with an asterisk.

Secondly, ah-- [ a bit of a laugh. ] I'm from Kansas, which some of you might recognise as being host to some pretty bad weather. Now, I'm not going to say I'm paranoid, but-- I like to think ahead. So, I've made up some kits with some of the usual survival paraphernalia back home and distributed them between floors. Feel free to help yourselves if you need them.

[ No one has to use them, but he’d rather everyone knows they're available. ]

Thank you for your time.
