What are the birthday traditions on your home planets?

[ jyn hasn't celebrated a birthday in something like... fifteen years so to say she's out of practice would be a gross understatement. she tells herself this is cultural anthropology, her mother would be proud. TIME TO LEARN, time to attempt to live like a normal human being... ]

Normally back home it's a fair amount of drinking, some sort of party or celebration and cake or whatever you'd like.

[ how dare you audio at her, alex, jyn doesn't want to speak to people like an adult. not like she isn't doing voice to text already, she supposes she can take off the to text part. she sounds british and tired. ]

That seems to be a common tradition. Cake and party.

Yeah. There's a lot of us here from earth and the same time period so it makes sense.

So, when's your birthday?

[realists]

I dunno. I'm not from Earth. The standard galactic calendar has a similar structure but not all planets have seasonal cycles like this moon and your Earth. [ the tone when she says earth sounds like she wants to say dirt planet but... earth... is dirt??? ] Makes it hard to line them up.

My birthday was not much before we arrived so that's where I'm putting it.

[ still hasn't said what it is though. :) ]

That makes sense. I had sort of just added two months to my time from when I got here before I decided to celebrate.

[and by celebrate she meant getting drunk. Because fuck her birthday.]

You can always decide when you wanna do it. Or have a Wonderland birthday where it's your unbirthday.

What's Wonderland?

It's a place from a story. Alice in Wonderland. It's really famous back home. There's a girl who falls down a rabbit hole to a place of magic and stuff. And when she's at a tea party with the Mad Hatter and his friends, they're celebrating Unbirthdays, because they want to have a party and it's no one's birthday.

[ what the fuck is earth??? jyn makes a noise that is probably half derision, half a huff of laughter. ]

That sounds absurd.

It's supposed to. The entire book is kind of about things being insane and off kilter.

[realists]

That's ridiculous. People from earth are mad.

[11calls]

I think people from everywhere a bit mad. It's one of those things that make us people.

[realists]

People are usually more varied where I am from. There are so many humans here, it's strange.

[11calls]

Yeah, that is definitely one thing that is really weird. But we're all from so many different versions of Earth too, it's hard to decide if they're all like the same baseline planet.

There isn't even an Earth in my galaxy.

[11calls]

Yeah, I've heard that. Some people just sort of think of Earth as you know, dirt under your feet or whatever. It's so weird that the word has the same double meaning at home as it does here, don't you think? Makes you wonder if things are connected and we just don't know about it.
