I seemed to have misplaced my slave priest. Since he belongs to me, if anyone could return him, I'd be most grateful. He's a little under six feet tall, black hair, blue eyes, and has a magic sword. Answers to the name Bishop Heahmund.

[Heahmund had stormed off in a huff after Ivar had found him the first time, but if he thinks the teenage Viking warlord who captured him back home is done with tormenting him, the priest is far from mistaken. Ivar's just getting started.]

He'll likely be quoting the Bible and telling you all how you're going to hell because he's extremely pompous and seems to think being a Christian bishop makes him better than everyone else. Be sure to let him know I'm looking for him.

I captured you in battle as part of the loot we took. I own you. Therefore, you're my slave. Being on a different world doesn't change that.

I am not your slave. I belong to God. He is a jealous God, he doesn't like to share.

You couldn't kill me even if you tried. That is what my gods have willed. So until your God comes down out of the clouds and tells me you are His, you belong to me.

[If they're going to start in with the religious talk again, might as well make it clear where they stand. Then a sly look enters Ivar's eyes.]

Unless of course you were actually starting to grow fond of me in captivity.

[He doubts it. Heahmund does run hot and cold, but usually it's cold towards Ivar.]

That is what you wish to think, Ivar, that does not make it so. And neither does you saying I am yours make me yours.

[ Heahmund stops short at the offhand comment and well, he ignores the part of himself that is saying "well, yes." ]

You know sugah, slavery might have been the thing to do in your day, but it ain't so socially acceptable nowadays, least where ah come from.

[There's a pause as she debates the words to use. She's only being nice about this because she likes the Viking.]

Why? It isn't as if I treat him terribly or anything.

The word 'slave' has gained a pretty negative connotation over the years.

[Because owning people isn't exactly what most moral people would consider positive life choices.]

Ah'm aware it's a cultural thing for you, but ah also imagine you don't like the idea of bein' owned or thought of like you were lesser than others based on their species, race, or creed.

[He's pretty aware of what it makes him out to be. And is still in the state of not caring at all.]

I don't think he's lesser. [Alright, maybe just a little because Heahmund is a Christian, but really, Ivar thinks that about all Christians.] I simply think he is mine because I won him after defeating him in battle. It was the same as raiding a church for their golden treasures.

[Though he's not doing the best job of explaining it, Viking slaves had it better than a lot of other cultures that enslaved people. They actually had rights the ability to make their own choices, and the chance to be freed.]

[Ivar, you're comparing a person to an object. Regardless of value, that's a huge denouncement right there.]

Ah'm going to counter that analogy with the fact that treasures are incapable of conscious thoughts and feelings. They ain't sentient beings.

[She sighs softly, knowing that he's not going to change his mind on the matter as Ivar's just as stubborn (if not more) than herself, and this is culturally ingrained within him.]

Ivar ah ain't forcin' you to do anythin', but ah wanted to explain how people with world's and histories like mine might react.

I definitely didn't keep him around because I thought he'd be obedient or good at following orders.

[Like any good psychopath, Ivar saw people as tools or toys. Heahmund definitely fell into the latter category with how much Ivar liked to play around with him. Besides, the good bishop had his own sadistic streak even if he didn't want to admit it.]

Still, he's a great warrior, and can make decent conversation when he's not going on and on about the Word of God every two minutes.

[He definitely sees Heahmund as such, an dog not obedient, but at least entertaining. He loves making the priest do what he wants, whether that's religious discussions, or watching him wreck carnage on the battlefield.]

He fights when I tell him to and that's good enough for me.

I'm guessing some people weren't happy about the 'slave' thing. Most earths are well past the owning people stage. Still, interesting your culture still has it.

If someone defeated me in battle and spared my life because they considered me useful, then that it what the gods willed. When it came to him, it was either make him a slave or crucify him.

[See, Ivar does have a streak of decency to him...if enslaving someone can be a better alternative that giving them a horribly painful death.]

So you say. Has anyone bothered to look up the city's laws on slavery?

[Not that he has either because he is Ivar and doesn't give a fuck, but at least it's something he can tell people who are complaining about this.]
